Scout the Fox

Lemon-water steam to clean the microwave

Works 🔬 Evidence-based

The hack

Microwave a bowl of water with lemon slices (or vinegar) until it steams, wait, then wipe the gunk right off.

Scout's verdict

Steam softens dried splatter so it wipes off with less scrubbing; Good Housekeeping’s cleaning expert recommends the method. Lemon helps with smell, but it isn’t a sanitizer.

Evidence: Good Housekeeping · Consumer Reports: what lemon can and can’t clean

Bottom line: Works. Costs about a dime.

⚠️ Safety

Use a microwave-safe bowl and let it sit a few minutes before opening: the water and bowl get very hot. Add a wooden spoon or chopstick to reduce superheating.
