Scout's verdict
A USDA study found microwaving a wet sponge for 1 minute killed over 99.9% of bacteria. A 2017 Scientific Reports study found regularly microwaved sponges in real homes weren’t less colonized than untreated ones, so experts still say replace sponges about weekly.

Bottom line: Helps between replacements; doesn’t replace replacing. Buy sponges in bulk.
⚠️ Safety
Sponge must be soaking wet and contain no metal (scrubby sponges can spark or catch fire). It comes out scalding: let it cool.
